We have heard the dismissive and disrespectful tone of big corporations and oligarchs loud and clear. This is our response. We will not fund our own oppression any longer. We are withdrawing our hard earned dollars from companies that retract DEI, that do not value us as employees, consumers, or supply chain providers. We will henceforth begin digitally divesting from apps that censor us and otherwise support oppression. They don’t think we care where they put their dollars. Let’s see if they care where we put ours.
Do not fret if you can’t do it all at once. Just focus on one app at a time, and finding one new source for things you buy from Amazon or big box stores (other than Costco! Shop Costco!). Don’t shop Target or Walmart if you can avoid it. Buy direct from the businesses that supply the products you need, they make more money that way anyway. Download the ‘Goods Unite Us’ app to search who companies supported in the last election if that helps you decide.
If you can switch to buying local, buying small business, Black, BIPOC, LGBTQ, or woman-owned, this will empower freedom within our own communities and lessen the dependency on the oppressor’s resources and systems. And many thanks to the allies who are divesting with us in solidarity. We see you and your actions matter.
I cannot help but think about the question: “What would you have done during the holocaust or the enslavement of Africans?” I consider it now because whatever you are doing right now as our democracy and freedoms are under attack, may be similar to what you would have done back then. Whether you are in a protected class or not, your choices are powerful. Be the highest version of yourself. Integrity is when your actions align with your values. Are you freeing yourself and others with your financial choices?
Not everyone feels safe enough to lift their pens or their voices. How you shop is one of the quietest, safest, and most effective ways to protest injustice.
